What Reiki has done for me...

A few years ago, I had a dream where I put my hands on a person's chest who needed healing. After I did this he awoke, refreshed and was indeed healed. Around the same time I kept seeing the word Reiki, which I incorrectly pronounced "rye-kee". I looked in the dictionary to see what this so called "rye-kee" was, but to no avail.

One sunny afternoon, I walked past a metaphysical store in San Francisco called The Crystal Way, where a Reiki Master had posted her services. I walked into the store to ask the sales associate what this "rye-kee" was. She corrected my pronounciation, calling it "ray-kee". She said it was hands-on energy healing. "That's it!" I proclaimed, with my arms up in the air in the form of a "V" for Victory. Ok, the woman definitely thought I had lost it, looking at me with suspicion. I told her about my dream and now knew that I would become a Reiki Practitioner.

I found a wonderful Reiki Master in Berkeley and thought that she might be my instructor. She invited me to a Reiki Share where fellow enthusiasts gather and have mini-sessions on each other.

The day of the event arrived, and the master invited us into her home. There were 30 or so guests seated in a very small space, but we managed to make it work. We broke into smaller groups of 4 and I was the first in my group to be worked on. I very nearly cried. It was amazing to me how much emotion was being brought to the surface and releasing simply from a few hands touching my body for a few minutes.

At the end of the share, I was excited to learn more about Reiki. I couldn't wait for my first class. Then, the teacher announced that she would be taking a 5 month leave of absence from her Reiki teachings to pursuit her studies in accupuncture. While I was happy for her, I was visibly disappointed that I would have to wait so long to start my studies.

I was able to get a ride back to the city from a few other guests that were at the share that evening. I conveyed to them my disappointment. Well, I am a huge believer in "everything always working out for the best of reasons" and I was about to find out what the best reason was in this case. The man driving told me that there was a wonderful Reiki instructor in the city (closer to me...yea!) that was very involved in the Reiki community. He gave me her information and my enthusiasm returned.

When I arrived home that evening, I found Anna Dorian's website and contacted her right away. I attended one Reiki Share and knew she was the right person for me. I signed up for Reiki 1 that day.

What exactly is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese form of holistic healing that utilizes non-invasive energy known as the Universal Life Force. "Rei" translates as "Spiritual" or "Higher Power" and "Ki" is from the Chinese word for "Chi" or "Energy". Essentially, Reiki practitioners act as a conduit transferring the flow of this Universal Life Force from themselves to the client, by placing the palms of their hands on various safe places on the recipient's body. As an intuitive energy, reiki will then direct itself to the area that most needs healing; restoring physical, emotional, and spiritual balance. Reiki is practiced while the recipient is lying fully clothed on a massage table or on a yoga mat. The Reiki experience is different for everyone. Sometimes it helps to clear old habits or patterns, sometimes you feel the energy throughout your body. Often people think of the session as a "massage", though this is truly a misnomer since the energy is doing all the work, and there isn't any kneading of the hands as in the case of massage. Reiki does promote deep relaxation. Reiki energy can absolutely never be used in a negative or harmful way. It can only be used for the highest good for both recipient and practitioner.

Every single person on this planet can be a reiki practitioner. Basically, through a series of attunements that are offered by a master which give the recipient different capabilities at various levels. It's as though they turn on a switch and WHAM you can practice reiki on yourself or others.

After each series of attunements there are levels of "clearing" that occur for approximately 21 days. Everyone is different and the Reiki energy works to help each individual where they need it most, that could be physical, spiritual or emotional clearing or all three. For me, the day after Reiki 1 (beginning level) I found that I had to consume about 2 gallons of water in approximately 6 hours and I didn't have to use the restroom once!

Over the next weeks and months, it was as though I had a thousand veils covering my eyes and each day another veil was lifted and taken away. It’s not that I had forgotten the memories of my past; rather it’s that I had forgotten how I felt about them. The very fact that I suppressed so much of my feelings over the first half of my life regarding these memories has led me to a truly unsatisfying, unhappy and directionless life until now. I have learned that we see, hear and feel only what we want; and I now am learning to see, hear and feel everything as it truly is. I am learning to enthusiastically feel my emotions in the present. Everything is about this very moment and not unknowingly harboring resentment about something from the past. I thank God/The Universe/The Universal Life Force for helping me take away the veils that were shrouding my True Existence as a Spiritual Being.

I am now a Reiki 2 practitioner (advanced level). After my reiki 2 attunement, another sort of "clearing" occured. Where as the first level "cleared" away deep resentment I was holding onto, this time I was "clearing" sadness and deep rooted fears I have had all my life. I began to connect with God and the Universe in ways that I would not have believed a few years ago.

While I thoroughly enjoy being a recipient, I love practicing on others, just as much. I highly recommend that every single person try it with a reiki practioner that is a good fit for you. Reiki promotes Inner Peace, World Peace and Love and proves to me that we are all connected through the Divine Universe.
